Herbalism Guide

Everything you need to know about Herbalism

Herbalism is a gathering profession that allows the herbalist to gather various herbs scattered throughout World of Warcraft. The herbs are then used by Alchemists and Inscribers (and sparingly by other professions) to create potions, glyphs, scrolls, and even Darkmoon Cards. Herbs are everywhere in the outdoors and even in many indoor locations. It’s one of the most profitable professions and the resources gathered are always hot items on the Auction House.

Herbalism goes great with every class and is a primary source of income for many of the denizens of Azerorth. Herbalism is great even for the smarty pants Mage or the stout, sturdy, and rude Warrior. Everyone can benefit from it even if you don’t take a secondary profession in Inscription or Alchemy! As an added bonus for your green thumb profession you’ll also get a free heal and many plants provide buffs (or sometimes debuffs) when gathered. There is a lot to picking plants in Azeroth (and beyond)!

Getting Started

To learn herbalism you will want to find an Herbalist Trainer. Trainers are available in every major city and can be located by simply asking a guard. The trainer will teach you herbalism for a small fee and then every 50 – 75 skill points you’ll return to increase your rank from Apprentice all the way up to Grand Master. See the chart below for more information on levels.

Rank Skill Levels
Apprentice 1-75
Journeyman 50-150
Expert 125-225
Artisan 200-300
Master (The Burning Crusade) 300-375
Grand Master (WotLK) 375-450

You can unlearn herbalism at anytime on your skills tab. Though if you drop it now and pick up later you will lose all of your skill points you’ve gained.

Gatherable Herbs

Please look below for a list of herbs at the bottom of this article. Click here to move down.

Skilling Up

Herbalism is a simple gathering profession. This means that you roam out into the wilds, find herbs, and then return to sell them on the Auction House. Herbs are gathered by right clicking the herb on the ground and waiting until the gather skill finishes. Afterwards you’ll be given a random number of herbs (between 1-3 on average) and the herb will then disappear.

Every time you gather an orange herb you’ll gain a skill point. You can tell an herb’s color by hovering over it with your mouse and it’ll display “Requires Herbalism,” which will be color coded based on your skill level and the skill level of the herb. Yellow herbs will almost always give you a skill point and green herbs are very flakey. They will often not give you any! Grey herbs will give you no skill points but you’ll still loot up the herbs.

You can use the ability “Find Herbs”  to display nearby herbs on your minimap. It’s somewhat inaccurate giving you only a rough location. Look around on the ground, behind trees, and even under the ground itself if the dot is grayed out to find your herb. Find Herbs does conflict with Find Minerals and other tracking abilities like the myriad ones that Hunters have.

There are various ways to gain skill bonuses to herbalism. Taurens gain a natural 15 point bonus to herbalism. A pair of Herbalist’s Gloves will give you a 5 point bonus but they’re Alliance only. The only way to get the recipe on the Horde side is to get it over the neutral auction house.

Speaking of gloves you can enchant your gloves with Herbalism, Advanced Herbalism, or Gatherer which will add 2,5,5 skill points respectively to your gloves. Combine them with a pair of Herbalist Gloves and you’ll have an extra bonus of 7 to 10 points. That can save you some time when you’re a few points to the next herb and want to start picking it now.

Note that adding on skill points will make your skill act a little weird. A +10 herbalism glove will let you gather a lot of herbs before you can normally get them. Most herbs will say yellow and orange longer since you’re still working off your “base” skill for the con, but your actual skill is higher with the bonus.

Making Cash with Herbalism

If you’re not using herbalism to make products then what are you using it for? How about making some mad wow gold? You don’t need a fancy wow gold guide to know this: herbs sell. They sell fast too. You can expect an almost instant turnaround of any level of herb if they’re put up at the right times. All herbs sell. From Peacebloom to the herbs growing on Arthas’s doormat move fast. Well, alright, they won’t always sell immediately but there is a very high demand for them.

So how do you turn the herbs into gold? Simple. Search up the herb on the Auction House and then find the ongoing price. You can play price wars trying to undercut everyone else (and get undercut yourself) or you can go the long steady approach and price your herbs at a set level hoping the cheaper herbs sell out leaving you gaining more of a profit.

Higher level herbs do sell more than lower level herbs since the market for them is much higher. However, inscription uses herbs from all levels for various Glyphs. Lower level herbs are also less camped. Another factor is flying mounts.

Having an epic flying mount can greatly increase your gathering rate. The faster you can gather then the faster you can get the herbs up on the market turning back into gold for you. It’s a big upfront investment though. So take that into mind when thinking about your flying mount options.

Lifeblood

Want to know what’s a great bonus to being an herbalist? Green thumbs? Nah. It’s Lifeblood! It’s an ability that heals you for a certain amount of health over time (5 seconds) based on your herbalism skill. It works in stealth and prowl and is even affected by abilities that increase healing. It can be used in the arena and can’t be dispelled making it a wonderful tool in PvP.

Rank Req Lvl Herb Level Heal
1 1 75 300
2 1 150 480
3 10 225 720
4 25 300 900
5 40 375 1200
6 55 400 2000

At high levels it doesn’t heal too much (2000 at max rank) which makes it less effective as players gain more and more health, but it’s still a useful tool during dailies. It does trigger the global cooldown so only use it while moving in difficult fights.

Bags

You’ll probably want somewhere special to hold all those herbs you’ll be gathering and an herb bag is the perfect place for them! Herb bags can make moving herbs from your bank to your inventory and back again an easy experience and can hold more than normal bags can. They even hold Druid reagents!

Herb bags will automatically fill all empty spots with herbs as soon as they’re gathered or moved to your inventory. They come in multiple sizes!

  • Herb Pouch (12 Slots): Not worth the cash and is usually a scam on the Auction House. If you’re low level and bagless then it’s a good alternative, but otherwise just bleh.
  • Cenarion Herb Bag (20 slots): 4 more slots than a Netherweave Bag so it’s not a bad purchase and is usually available on the cheap.
  • Satchel of Cenarius (24 slots): A little bit more expensive, but well worth it for having about 8 more slots than a Netherweave Bag and four more than a Frostweave Bag.
  • Mycah’s Botanical Bag (28 slots): Can be cheap or expensive, depending on going rates for Mooncloth on your server. This should only be an investment if bank space is prime and you stockpile a ton of herbs.
  • Emerald Bag (32 slots): Moonshroud is made once every four days (although you can make two at once) meaning that’s it’s generally very expensive. 32 slots is a lot, but getting a cheaper bag and selling off herbs you don’t need will be more profitable.

Secondary Professions

So what profession goes with Herbalism? Let’s take a look!

Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Jewelcrafting: These are all production professions that produce items that rarely require herbs. This means that you won’t be able to gather metal or leather for these professions and you’ll have to rely on the expensive auction house in order to supply yourself. If you’re well off that’s not a problem, but it will be costly. It all depends on your playstyle and if you want to gather to create or use the Auction House to purchase the mats straight up using gold you've farmed.

Inscription and Alchemy: Inscribers can mill herbs into pigments which can be crafted into inks. These inks will often sell for more than the base herbs and can be applied to make glyphs and scrolls. Alchemists need herbs to create potions which are always in high demand. So picking up one of these professions as your secondary would not only be smart but a good investment in making even more money out of Herbalism.

Skinning: Herbalism goes wonderfully with Skinning as a secondary profession. They work well as a one two hit combo in bringing in the cash.

Mining: Mining does not work well with Herbalism. Find Minerals and Find Herbs conflict creating a scenario where you can only search for one resource at a time. This makes it a very inefficient combo. It works, but you won’t be able to utilize both professions to their max at any given time.

Tailoring and Enchanting: No complaints here. You’re not going to find a pro or con to bringing herbalism along with these two outside of the extra cash you’ll make. They have no negative or positive impact on herbalism so go for it if it’s what you want.
