Taking a step away from the fantasy-filled MMOG marketplace, EVE Online is a science-fiction based massively multiplayer game that is almost completely player-run. Although many of the functions in the game have been built by the developers, the game has very few NPCs that the player's interact with outside of "safe space" and the meatiest part of the gameplay occurs between rival player groups. Every player in EVE flies their own spaceship, and their avatar is represented by a character rendering.
Unlike many other MMOGs, EVE Online takes place on one server, where every player has the opportunity to interact with every other player in the game. Player versus player combat is also an essential part of the EVE environment, with players finding themselves completely at the mercy of other players. Players are recommended to have at least enough money in the bank to buy new ships, lest the old one be destroyed and the player have no money left to buy a new ship.
This sort of gameplay has set the stage for extremely interesting player rivalries and the development of intricate player organization. Players can join corporations (guilds) of other players, and those corporations can eventually become a part of larger player groups called alliances that are made up separate corporations. With over 30,000 users playing on the server at any given time, the EVE Online world is certainly one to watch and participate in.
