The universe of Star Trek Online is proving to be full of conflict and some interesting story continuations stemming from the many Star Trek series. Cryptic's latest lore segment for the game, "The Path to 2409: 2389", tells about the conflict within the Romulan Empire, as many individuals make a grab for power in the midst of the chaos following the destruction of the Romulan system, several are assassinated. The Klingon Empire takes advantage of the chaos and begins to launch attacks into Romulan space. In some cases, the Klingons engage in skirmishes with Federation ships providing Romulan support along the Romulan border.

The latest story advancement also talks about the events on Cardassia, with Elim Garak assuming command of the new government. The situation on Cardassia remains tense at best, but Garak tries to maintain unity and order amid the ruins of Cardassia. In Federation space, the Federation holds hearings about the Vulcan experimentation with Red Matter and the trial to decide the fate of Voyager's "The Doctor" holographic program.

The Klingon Empire takes advantage of the confusion with lightning strikes into Romulan space. The empire takes control of the Tranome Sar and Nequencia systems in a matter of days, and is poised to strike deeper into Romulan territory. The Klingons temporarily halt their advance when Starfleet sends a fleet to protect the Romulan/Klingon border, but tensions remain high and there are reports of minor skirmishes between Federation and Klingon starships.
