An Hour with Turbine: Interview with James Jones, Executive Producer of DDO

Straight from the Producers of DDO!

This weekend I had the pleasure of an exclusive interview with James Jones, DDO's Executive Producer, where I proceeded to try to get as many details about what's coming in DDO. He was kind enough to give me as much as he could, so that you, his customers, could find out what is coming up in the next year!

"And we will probably touch some of our old adventure areas, Tangleroot, Three Barrel Cove, previously areas that didn’t get a lot of play outside the one or two times you go in to get your favor points. We want to really open these areas up, give players a lot to do there."

    An Update With James Jones

FiringSquad had a chance to sit down with James Jones to find out how things are going with Dungeons and Dragons Online since it's launch eariler this year.

Last February, Turbine launched Dungeons and Dragons Online, one of the most anticipated MMORPGs of 2006. In the months after the game's official launch Turbine has released new free content for the game as well as a new single player mode. To get an update on DDO's progress FiringSquad got a chance to chat with Turbine executive producer James Jones.

FiringSquad: First, Dungeons and Dragons Online has been online for a few months now. Overall is Turbine happy with the number of subscribers for the game and the game's overall reaction so far?

James Jones: We are very happy with the way the game has grown since our launch. New players are discovering DDO everyday and we are very busy rolling up major updates to the game. We are currently operating in North America and Europe and are planning to expand to Japan and China later this year.

Computer Games Online Speaks With Developers

ComputerGamesOnline posted a two part interview with the developers of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach. This series takes a look at the upcoming module Twilight Forge.

What is the meaning behind the title of the new module; Twilight Forge? What are some of the new features in the module?

The Twilight Forge is a ruined armory nestled within the caldera of a volcano. Mind Flayers are using this forge to create weapons for a war against Eberron®. The player must navigate past the security system of the Twilight Forge and fight mind-controlled monsters, as well as Mind Flayers and ancient Quori-built Warforged to put an end to the Mind Flayers’ plans.

    All Alone in Stormreach...

MMORPG.com recently conducted an interview with Turbine regarding the new solo play option, and some of DDO's future plans.

MMORPG.com: Explain the Solo option players will be able to use in Dungeons and Dragons Online™: Stormreach™ (DDO)? How will it impact new players?

Turbine:The new solo option we are adding will allow players to select a 4th difficulty level on adventures. Currently DDO includes Normal, Hard and Elite modes and with this addition there is now a Solo mode. In this first rollout of solo content we have focused on the lower level new player experience specifically as it becomes easier to solo existing group content as your character gains levels and acquires more spells, skills and items. When you play an adventure on solo mode it is still the same adventure as it is on the other modes -- it's just the difficulty of the monsters and traps are geared towards a single player of the appropriate level.

Find out what else they have to say...

    A Critical Hit?

Though reviews of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach have been guardedly positive, many in the industry are wondering how well certain game elements (e.g. "forced" grouping to make much real progress, a short yet very steep climb to the 10th and highest level) were translating into pageviews. According Tom Nichols, Turbine's VP of Marketing, business is "rolling" along.

Nichols couldn't disclose the number of people that have bought the game and are currently subscribing, but he did confirm that the game was the largest in Turbine's history. "We expected success for Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach (DDO) because it represents a new paradigm for the MMO genre with unique features including party-based quests, integrated voice chat, real-time action combat, and award winning graphics that recreate the essence of the classic pen-and-paper roleplaying experience," said Nichols. "The response to the game has been terrific."
