You never get a second chance to make a first impression goes an old saying, and rarely is it proved wrong. Dungeons and Dragons Online has done just that however with the switch in revenue model away from subscriptions to a free-to-play with microtrasnaction platform. Not content to simply rest on its newfound success, the team at Turbine is cranking out adventure packs to satisfy the newly resurgent player base. One of the newest to enter the fray is Gianthold, a pack intended for players in the level 13-14 range that features ten adventures, fourty-five quests and a raid.

    Take the Mayan challenge.
    Bounty_Bay_Maya3.jpg

Bounty Bay Online will be launching its newest add-on November 25th, 2009. With the latest content addition comes the new high level Mayan group instance. Located deep within the South American rainforest, the capital Mayan city is home to many precious relics, bloody rituals, and a multitude of dangers for players to overcome.

On 25th November the latest and up to now the most comprehensive ever add-on for Bounty Bay Online will be available on the servers. With the release of the add-on, 'Beyond the Horizon' next Wednesday, high level players will enter the demanding Maya group instance for the first time.

Hidden deep in the South American rainforest lies Salinas, the capital city of the Mayan civilisation. In the hinterland beyond this mysterious city, in the middle of the both beautiful and treacherous tropical landscape, impressive pyramids rise up to meet the sky. They are ancient silent witnesses to long-forgotten knowledge, unspeakable riches, but also bloody rituals. A few Mayan warriors still roam this territory today, guarding over precious relics and monuments of their culture, shrouded in legend. Players battle through this danger-ridden jungle full of viperous creatures until they finally reach the entrance to the Maya instance, right in the heart of the hinterland. This is where a daunting tropical territory awaits, in which aggressive ghost beings, predatory animals and yet more Mayan warriors lie in wait, guarding a mysterious treasure.

Together with the instance, 'Beyond the Horizon' will also render the existing dungeons, such as the Mallorca Cave and the Cretan Labyrinth, playable by groups for the first time. Besides that, all instances in Bounty Bay Online will offer daily, well-rewarded quests with the upcoming expansion.

Now that patch 1.5.1 has gone live addressing some major concerns of the playerbase, it is time to look forward to future improvements What could those be? Aion CM Tamat tells the community to keep an eye out...

On November 24th, we will be showing a movie that demonstrates the future of Aion with actual gameplay

I'll certainly be glued to my screen on the 24th to find out what this could be! Any thoughts? Will it be new zones, maybe quest additions? Can we hope for new content to fill in some of the gaps that currently exist?

In what should come as no surprise, Daelo from Blizzard, announced that Icecrown Citadel is going to be gated in much the same way TotC was. What this means is that the whole raid will not open up when it is released. Instead a new wing will open up every few weeks, and heroic mode will not be available until you defeat the whole raid.

Icecrown Citadel testing has been progressing very well over the last few weeks, and this has been a huge help to the encounter design team. We want to thank everyone who has logged onto the PTR and tried the encounters there.

As we're now getting closer to the release of 3.3.0, we wanted to talk about our plans for access progression within Icecrown Citadel. Icecrown Citadel is going to be broken up into four distinct sections: The Lower Spire, Plagueworks, Crimson Hall, and Frostwing Halls. We plan on releasing these four sections of Icecrown Citadel over time and not all immediately when patch 3.3.0 goes live. At this point we can't give precise dates for these release dates as they are determined by when patch 3.3.0 goes live. Once dates are known with more certainty, I'll update the community so they can plan appropriately.

The first section that opens will include the Lord Marrowgar, Lady Deathwhisper, Icecrown Gunship Battle, and Deathbringer Saurfang encounters. Progress beyond that point will be prevented for several weeks. Then the Plagueworks will open with Rotface, Festergut, and Professor Putricide becoming available. After another period of time, the Crimson Hall will open and you can then fight the Blood Princes and Blood-Queen Lana'thel. The final Frostwing Halls unlock then occurs after that, making Valithria Dreamwalker, Sindragosa, and the Lich King available. We believe a staggered release of the content will allow players to experience Icecrown Citadel at a sustainable, measured, and ultimately more enjoyable pace.

There are other elements that gate access along the way. Players may not attempt any Heroic versions of 10 player encounters until they have defeated the Lich King in a 10 player raid. Similarly, players must defeat the Lich King in a 25 player raid before they can attempt a Heroic 25 player encounter. So players must master every normal difficulty encounter in Icecrown Citadel before attempting Heroic difficulty.

The Lich King may not be attempted until Professor Putricide, Blood-Queen Lana'thel, and Sindragosa are defeated. Furthermore, the Heroic difficulty of The Lich King encounter may not be attempted in any week unless the three aforementioned encounters have been defeated in Heroic difficulty that week.

The Ashen Verdict provides reinforcements and material for players to assault Icecrown Citadel, but this support is not endless. Raids will have a limited number of attempts total each week to defeat the four most difficult encounters in Icecrown Citadel: Professor Putricide, Blood-Queen Lana'thel, Sindragosa, and the Lich King. As these boss encounters are unlocked, the number of attempts available per week will increase. The initial number of attempts provided for defeating Professor Putricide is only five. When Blood-Queen Lana'thel unlocks, the amount of total attempts remaining will increase to 10. Then when Sindragosa and the Lich King unlock, 15 total attempts will be available to defeat all four bosses. After a raid has exhausted their attempts for the week, the Ashen Verdict must withdraw their support and the four most difficult bosses all despawn and become unavailable for the week. The limited attempt system is a feature of both Normal and Heroic difficulty.

There will be no explicit rewards for defeating the Lich King with a specific number of attempts remaining as there was with Trial of the Grand Crusader. There will also not be an achievement to complete Icecrown Citadel without being defeated by a boss encounter, or letting a raid member die. (i.e. A Tribute to Insanity).

In the weeks and months after all twelve encounters are unlocked, additional attempts against the final four boss encounters become available. This represents the Ashen Verdict growing more powerful and gaining a stronger foothold in Icecrown Citadel. To further help raids, Varian Wrynn and Garrosh Hellscream will begin to provide assistance by inspiring the armies attacking Icecrown Citadel. This is represented as an additional zone wide spell effect applied to all players that will increase their hit points, damage dealt, and healing done. This effect will also increase in effectiveness over time. Players may opt out of the spell's effect if they so wish.Source

Fifteen Years of MMO Memories
The Ten Ton Hammer community shares some of our favorite MMO stories

Asheron's Call and Everquest celebrated their tenth anniversaries earlier this year and both EverQuest 2 and World of Warcraft mark their fifth anniversaries this month. It's a milestone year for many MMOs, so we asked our team and members of our community to share some of tales they've accumulated during their playing careers. Most our humorous, some are touching, but all of them highlight the best part of the massively multiplayer experience: the community.

From the article:

“My favorite MMOG memories happened in Meridian59...  [The game dialog] used to say "You can't spell while resting," so I would type nonsense words while I was at the inn resting. They finally changed the message to, "You can't cast spells while resting."” - Ten Ton Hammer member sourpuss

Thanks to all who participated, and we hope you'll enjoy the article (Shay and Machail contributed two awesome stories, so it's well worth a read even if you've already checked out the thread).

Creating a build for Champions Online can be difficult with the insane number of choices a player has. Fortunately for you, your friends at Ten Ton Hammer are here to provide a quick guide for a ranged dps build to help you unleash death upon your foes from a long ways away.

This ranged dps build is based upon several power sets, primarily the munitions, archery, and fighting claws power sets. There is also a little telekinesis and force power sets sprinkled in. Why are there some fighting claws powers, you ask? Well, despite its reputation as a melee power set, there are some excellent ranged abilities as well. Please note that not every power listed will be a ranged power. There will be a couple of melee attacks as well, and to answer your question as to why, the reason is that sometimes your enemy will get up to you and you’ll need something up your sleeve.

Find out about one of Eve Online's most dangerous spies.
    Thron Head-On

The Mittani returns this week with an interview of one of the most notorious spies in the Eve Online universe referred to as 'Darwin's Accelerator'. For years this agent has crept in the shadows of many hostile fleets and left a trail of leaked fleet information and destruction in his wake. Find out what this agent has to say about the difficulty of spy work and much more in this week's Sins of the Solar Spymaster.

Surprises regarding espionage-While it is easy to give just one player the credit for an intel success, it is like most things in Eve, a true team effort. Information flows constantly; fleet movements, pos locations, CTAs, chatlogs, etc. The victory comes though from the correct analysis of the information and the ability to create the appropriate reaction. So much of my work gets passed on to others who then use the information to actually pop the cynos and spring the traps. Sometimes it is quick, real-time minute by minute analysis and reaction, other times, its planning hotdrops days in advance. In either case, it usually starts with just a bit of information that, with the right analysis and preparation, blossoms into glorious tears and nerd rage. All of which is recorded for later use.

One of the frequently overlooked though integral aspects of character advancement in MMOGs ties directly into whatever shape the in-game economy ultimately takes. Players obsess over seeing the hordes of currency they’ve amassed throughout the course of gameplay constantly increasing nearly as much as the almighty XP bar. While most developers carefully plot out multiple means of keeping in-game currency gains in check, more often than not MMOGs fall prey to the ugly beast otherwise known as mudflation. We take a look at this aspect of MMOG gameplay and its effects on new players today in Loading… Market Mudflation Overload.
